ST. IRENAEUS CHESS CLUB
Open to Grades 1-8

The Chess Club meets after school from 3:05-4:05 p.m. on Tuesdays in Room 7. Three levels are offered:

  • Beginning - Students will learn how to move the pieces, special rules such as castling, en passant, pawn promotion and basic checkmates.
  • Intermediate - Students already know the above rules, and will learn middle game strategy, chess themes such as pins, forks, back rank mates, etc.
  • Advanced - Students will learn advanced strategies about planning, choosing the right moves, and endgame techniques.

Class is taught by chess master Diana Durham, one of the top women chess players in the U.S., and formerly one of the top 10. Ms. Durham has participated in three U. S. Championships, winning the brilliancy prize at one of them. She has written many articles in local and national chess publications, and is a former columnist for a local chess magazine. Ms. Durham has been promoting chess in schools and teaching chess to children since 1990. She loves working with children and helping them improve and reach new levels of knowledge in chess.

The price is $65/student for a 6-week session. Each session ends with a tournament and prizes! For more information, contact Diana Durham 714/995-1891.
