FIFTH GRADE ACCELERATED READER GUIDELINES

The fifth grade Accelerated Reading program is worth 25% of the student’s total reading grade per quarter. This program is significant to determine your child’s reading comprehension level.

To achieve a passing grade, a student will be evaluated by
the amount of points he/she receives for each book read
the average percent correct that he/she receives on library tests.
Please refer to chart.

36 35 34 33 32 31 30 29 28 27 26 25 24 23 22 21 20 19 18 17 16 15 14 13 12 11 10
100 99 98 97 96 95 94 93 92 91 90 89 88 87 86 85 84 82 80 79 78 77 76 74 72 70 68

Each student receives a reading log. The reading log shows when a student begins a book, how long he/she spends reading it, and the reading level. Pages should be recorded daily. The log should be taken home daily (even weekends) and brought to class daily. The parent signs the log weekly (Monday nights) after the student records information. The log will be collected on Tuesday, as I will meet with each student to check on his or her progress and there is a parent signature.

The student’s reading level (ZPD range) is written in the log. Books should be chosen within this range to achieve optimal growth in reading without frustration. Before a student moves to the next ZPD level, he/she needs to test successfully on several books in the higher point range. This means the student should be receiving 85% - 92% or better on those tests to move up to the next range.

The reading log must be filled in with appropriate information before the student will be allowed to test in the library.

Part of the student’s daily, required homework is to read 25 minutes (minimum) at home.

Remember : STUDENTS WHO READ ARE THE ONES WHO SUCCEED!!!

Thank you for your support.
